Troubleshooting: updating the plugin

Most updates come through your WordPress Plugins screen. See Install and update the plugin for both ways to update.

No update shows on the Plugins screen

Why it happens. Updates only come to a website with a saved, active license key. WordPress also only checks for updates now and then.

  1. Open License in the plugin’s menu and check it says Active. If not, add your key.
  2. On the Plugins screen, click Check for updates under HowToAI School Connector.
  3. Still nothing, and you know there is a new version? Update by hand: download the zip from your account and upload it.

The update starts, then WordPress says it failed

Why it happens. The update server only hands the new version to a website whose key is good on it. A key that expired, or was moved to another website, gets no download.

  1. Open License and check your key is active on this website.
  2. Click update now again on the Plugins screen.
  3. If it still fails, update by hand with the zip from your account.

WordPress says “Destination folder already exists”

Why it happens. The plugin is already installed. WordPress asks before it replaces it.

  1. Click Replace current with uploaded on that same screen. Your settings and your team’s memory stay.

After an update, Claude says a new tool doesn’t exist

Why it happens. Claude keeps the list of your website’s tools from when you connected it, or last refreshed it. Starting a new chat doesn’t change that list, so tools that came with the update stay hidden.

  1. In Claude, click Customize, then Connectors, and choose your website’s connector.
  2. Open the three-dot menu and click Refresh tools list.
  3. Start a new chat. To check, type call seo-check-urls on /. It should answer with your home page’s status.
  4. Still missing? Disconnect the connector and connect it again, then start a new chat.

WordPress says “Could not copy file” or “The uploaded file has expired”

Why it happens. The upload was interrupted, or it took too long. Nothing was changed: the version you had is still installed.

  1. Go back to Plugins, Add New Plugin, Upload Plugin and upload the same file again.
  2. Click Install Now and then Replace current with uploaded straight away.
  3. If it keeps failing, check your hosting has free disk space, or ask your host.

Good to know: After any update, also open Skills. If it says Update available, add the new skills plugin to Claude or ChatGPT. See Update your skills.
